Vitalik dropped a bombshell on us when said that "high fees make Ethereum less secure". I explored what that means, why it's true, and what it means for the future of blockchains

The source of this is: https://twitter.com/VitalikButerin/status/1285593115672358912
And in particular, he links to: https://www.cs.princeton.edu/~arvindn/publications/mining_CCS.pdf
I am: an Ethereum entrepreneur working full time on https://flowerpatch.app, an indie game
When I first read that tweet, I was really surprised. We've been thinking since the start of Bitcoin that fees would gradually become the long-term thing that sustains miners. We were told that paying miners = security for the network
Overview:
The btc whitepaper explained that the block rewards would go down, slowly over time. Ethereum is modeled on this concept too, though has no fixed cap. Then: big blocks are good, because big blocks = more fees. However, looking back at this idea now, we see that there was a fair bit of hand-waving in this transition, and a new scalability problem becomes clear:
  • Up until recently, blocks have basically always had the same value per block. It turns out that this was a very important game theory assumption!
  • As fees begin to dominate the miners' revenue, we enter into a world where some blocks are very valuable, and some blocks not so much
  • An additional problem, especially in Bitcoin, is the "exponential time variance" in block mining. Sometimes, there's just no blocks for an hour
  • Miners always have the option to "fork" a blockchain. As we start to have high variance in the value of blocks, it becomes much more logical to try to fork valuable blocks instead of building on top of them. The paper states this as: "it becomes attractive to fork a “wealthy” block to “steal” the rewards therein". You can incentivize other miners to "join in" on your theft-fork by not taking all of fee revenue (i.e. not including all the transactions), leaving some for others that wish to follow you into the dark world. The paper provides an illustration: https://i.imgur.com/I2K9QDd.jpg
  • The paper also outlines several other "bad actor" strategies that miners can use. Increasingly, as blocks become irregular, and more "evil" strategies start to creep in, this actually opens the door to further bad actors, and collusion
  • One key quote from the paper: "Without a block reward, immediately after a block is found there is zero expected reward for mining but nonzero electricity cost, making it unprofitable for any miner to mine." — this leads to another class of game theory issues, where miners have no reason to start mining until transactions start to pile up, but still have to pay electricity fees. The world has changed since the btc whitepaper: various schemes for mining multiple currencies at once, or quickly switching to alternate networks, become available. Miners may choose to switch off their equipment, or switch networks for a while, instead of waiting for transactions to pile up. They call this phenomenon "mining gaps"
Their conclusion:
Impact on Bitcoin security. If any of the deviant mining strategies we explore were to be deployed, the impact on Bitcoin’s security would be serious. At best, the block chain will have a significant fraction of stale or orphaned blocks due to constant forks, making 51% attacks much easier and increasing the transaction confirmation time. At worst, consensus will break down due to block withholding or increasingly aggressive undercutting.
How this affects Ethereum:
  • Ethereum has, like Bitcoin, been slowly reducing its block rewards
  • Today, as Vitalik said, we had fees make up 40-50% of the block rewards
  • This actually introduces a new scalability issue — if we increase the blocksize by 4, even if the network could handle that, we could have a situation where fees make up 200% of the block reward (50% x 4). This would start to seriously undercut Ethereum's security, as the tweet alluded
  • This issue is not purely hypothetical, but could really happen, if fees hit a sustained 100-300Gwei — on today's eth1 network! Even without extra blockspace! We could start seeing these mining strategies appearing soon
How we fix this:
  • As Vitalik mentioned, EIP-1559 does largely solve this issue. That's all the reason we need to include this EIP. Burning fees is the key to fixing the game theory. But if nothing else, you can achieve a 0% inflation rate while still issuing block rewards, as long as enough eth is burned
  • ETH2 is not susceptible to these issues, because mining rewards are shared, rather than adversarial. The years of game theory research were worth it
What happens with Bitcoin:
Well, this probably won't be an issue for quite a while, because BTC's rewards will only slowly dwindle over the next 100 years. However, they have a strict policy around this. BTC was always meant to have a totally fixed cap, and that's a big part of their "digital gold" narrative. What happens if the price of BTC tanks while the network is at capacity and has high fee revenue? They could start seeing issues pretty soon, especially with the abundance of other coins using the same mining hardware. There's already a fair bit of miners that jump between BTC/BCH/BSV based on profitability, so the "mining gaps" we discussed earlier could become more prevalent

On the Instability of Bitcoin Without the Block Reward

My main long term concern with Bitcoin has, for awhile, been the question of what happens when the block reward / subsidy gets close to zero. I have heard many reasonable concerns expressed about the prospect of a bitcoin without block subsidies, and no convincing rebuttals.
So on this eve of the third halving, I'd like to raise this concern for discussion. To facilitate the discussion, I want to share a paper I'm currently reading, titled 'On the Instability of Bitcoin Without the Block Reward'. (PDF) Basically, they argue that in this scenario, option two can potentially be more profitable for a miner than option one. If you don't intuitively see it, I'd recommend reading at least the first page or so of the paper for a description of the problem.
I'd also like to note, explicitly, this paper isn't arguing that fees can't replace block rewards. It's saying that this problem exist even if fees replace block rewards 1:1.
That said, I do also worry that fees will have a very hard time replacing block rewards. Right now, even after the halving, each block is worth over 50,000 USD. Since a block can contain at most about 6,000 transactions, you're looking at fees of about 8 USD per transaction, absolute minimum. Even for opening/closing a Lightning Channel, that feels high. Sure, it'd be nothing to large institutions, but is that the future we want for bitcoin, a chain that prices out common users? And while it's true that the chain could operate with less rewards going to miners overall, that would have negative implications for security and transaction finality.
Worse yet, it seems, is that without a subsidy, the security of the chain absolutely depends on this fee market developing. There needs to be a backlog of transactions for the chain to function function. Clearing the mempool becomes bad because 1 sat/byte fees aren't going to be adequate to secure the chain.
So those are my thoughts on this. What are yours? I'd love to see some good and polite discussion around this topic, either around the specific concerns I've raised, or other concerns related to block subsidy reductions.

XFX RX 470 Overheating

Guys, I have an RX 470 from XFX, and it overheats BAD. It goes up to 95ºC when playing "lighter" games like Kovaak's and CS:GO, but in Fortnite doesn't get that bad: about 85ºC. I have 4 fans, 1 behind for exhaustion, 2 in the front for bringing cool air, and 1 in the front for exhaustion as well. I already put the GPU fans speed on max, but it doesn't help at all, it just makes the PC really, really loud. Have cleaned it twice, last time a few weeks ago, and changed the thermal paste. Does anyone know why it gets hotter on games that are lighter then Fortnite, and how to fix it being so hot? I would really appreciate it.
PS: I bought it used from Amazon for 100$ 1 year ago, but it wasn't used for mining bitcoins. And it is not overclocked.

Purely Hypothetical - what would you do if the high GPU load in port had an evil reason?

NOTE: this thread is purely hypothetical and NOT an accusation or some kind of conspiracy theory! It's just a though.
By now everyone knows or have noticed that the GPU load in port is insanely high, actually much higher than in battles itself. WG knows about this for a very long time but does not fix it for whatever reason. What would you do if it turns out that they would use the game client to have all of us mining cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin, for WG to make a penny or two on the side?
If you are not living under a rock you should know that GPUs are way more powerful than CPUs for certain tasks and that's why cryptocurrency is mined with GPU power. While everyone of us is in port the GPU load goes up to 100% for absolutely no reason and as soon as you enter a battle or some other UI screen the load drop extremely low as it should be. Imagine we all are zombies farming money while our computers are not busy.
I know, you say this is all nonsense and such and i do not say WG does this. But if you think it is just fiction that a game client would abuse the users to mine money for the publisher than you have to be very naive. Everywhere where money is made people cheat and abuse to take the easy route. Happens in all of our life in some form. There have been some cases where exactly this happened. Steam has banned multple games to this day where the publisher implemented a cryptominer into their game client. Those were usually Indie Games and not very good made. The probably by far most popular scandal of this sort is ESEA, a very famous CS:GO client. They had hundreds of thousands of users mined money for them unknowingly. They got caught and had to pay a fine in the 6-digits and forcefully donated the mined bitcoins to some social organizations. Use Google to read about it and also find tons of info about the Indie Games bans on Steam.
So what would you do if it turns out the 100% GPU load would be related to such a fraud? Would you instantly quit the game? Would you sue WG? Would you not care at all?
Yes i know, some ports have a lower load, some custom mods -that seem to not work anymore for whatever reason, maybe because users who used them didn't mine money so they were blocked- had nearly 1% GPU load. Perhaps this is just some sort of cover to make it not so obvious that something weird is going on in most ports.
What do you think what causes this high GPU load? Can a company that made, according to official Bloomberg ranking, more than 1.5 Billion dollar annual revenue back a few years, not afford a few programmers (out of the 4500+ employees they have according to the russian Wiki) that track down the reason for this absurd GPU load and fix it? Or do they simply not want to because the GPU load has a 'very good' reason? And if you think this is no big deal for you do the math, check how much power your GPU draws under full load and how much power consumption is wasted because of this. You'd be surprised how much of YOUR money the 'harmless' port in a pixelgame blows out the window for no reason. Not to mention that heavy load for longer periods of time cause the lifespan of the hardware drop significantly, means it has to be replaced sooner, which obviously cost YOUR money as well.
But who knows, maybe 2020 is the year of the UI and they fix this crap. Wishful thinking …

Is Mayhem Client Safe?

I get sketched out downloading this kind of stuff after ESEA's scandal.
For those that don't know, ESEA was a very popular and "safe" CS:GO client. It turned out it used your graphics card to mine bitcoins.

Idle-Empire the site comparable to Swagbucks

They offer payouts from PayPal all the way to crypto currencies included Bitcoin(BTC); Ethereum(Eth); Litecoin(Ltc); Bitcoin Cash(BCH) and even Paysafecards and more.....
The Payout also includes Opskins and CS:GO Shop
The min withdraw is 1000 points (0,10$) for BCH and LTC
1000 Point (0,10$) For Opskins and CS:GO Shop
1000 Points (0,10$) for Ethereum
1000 Points (0,10$) for Bitcoin
Aprox. 60.000 Points (6,00$) for the first Paysafecard
and a lot more !
But for example, you can convert your BCH in any other Crypto Currencie if needed for example on Binance or OKEX.
You earn points very fast. I would recommend to do the Final Fantasy XV offer on Adgate at the start
(The Citadel Level 10 for less time and less reward, the Power 100k for more time and more reward)
(Advice:Upgrade your Citadel to 7 and upgrade all your baracks also to 7 have like 10 farms 9 stone generators, 5 metal generators , and one energy generator for fastes success all on level 7.
If you watch in the "Upgrade your Hero" Event is also Op, so don't use hero xp when there is no event. If you have something from the event like 250 Points you will get an bonus (Limit is 60, but with 250 your ranked higher)
and then you can upgrade your walls with the Fire walls (4x faster then normal walls) witch also gives you over 24000 Power(~25%) .Then only train troops ( siege machine)
and you will have 100k in under 5 days if you are lazy.
Other offers are also insane good

A very good feature is that you can mine wit hthis website for points. Like WTF free points for your Pc running :o OMG

entitled family wants a pc for a 63d of the price

so this is my first post on reddit and i dont have English as my main languishe so im sorry for any spelling errors.
me= me
em= entiteld mom
cbc= choosy beggar child
ed= entitled dad
this happend not to long ago. So I run a business where i buy used and new computers and pc parts assemble them and sell them for a profit.
so a afternoon on one of my most stressful seasons a mom comes in and takes a look around. i still had four more customers in the shop at the time so i didn`t think much of it. then the mom comes up to me.
em -hi! I would like a full gaming setup for my son.
i usually ask my customers about all the parts beacuse I want to make the pc thats best for the things that they would use it for. and i am the maneger and only employe. lets continue!
me -hi! so what games would you like the setup be able to do and what is your budget?
em -well i want a setup for my son. he has been realy good in school so i want to make him happy!
me -ok do you know what kind of games he likes to play? i want it to be the best just for him.
em - ok i will get my son i will be back soon!
me -ok!
so it takes about an hour bfore they get back and its em, cbc and ed that comes in and at the moment noone was in the store eccept them.
me -Hi again!
cbc -I want a pc! Now mom!
em -sure cbc just give me a minute.
me -so what games are you looking to play cbc?
cbc - PUBG, Gta, CS GO, Minecraft and mine bitcoin
im not kidding cbc said mine bitcoin and cbc is like eight.
me -ok? so i would recomend a setup with a 4K monitor (gaming accessories) and pc with a Gtx 1080 ti a i7-8700k motherboard
Sadly dont remember the other parts.
that will be 3150 dollars mam
ed - SO MUCH!?!
me -well your son wanted to mine bitcoin and play pubg on it so that would probably be the best for his needs but i could look something else up if you want?
em -do that right away!
me -so this wont be as good at mining bitcoin and at the graphicx but it will still be pretty good (specs gtx 1060 6gb, uppgrading package i3-8100 motherboard and case so just about 1750 with the accessories.
me - it will be 1750 and 1800 if you want delivery.
em - thats way too much what can you do for 50 bucks?
i am so schocked.
me - whait are you serious? you know that 50 bucks will barely get him a good keyboard.
ed - comeon he got good grades and got first place in his swimming competition last week.
me - well i just bought a pc you can have for 50 bucks but it will not run any of the games that he requested and will not mine bitcoin.
em- please just make an exception. its not like you need the money anyway "points around the stores at all the pc,s and accessories all worth about 15k all together
me - you know that i still need to pay my rent and i accually don`t make that much. i just make about 3,5k a month.
em -Still just give us the pc.
me - no? please could you leave the store?
they all gets really upset and starts to yell at me and telling me to get my maneger.
me -stop shouting or i will call the police and for the record I am the maneger!
em - ok but i will take this!
and she takes the most expensive thing in my store. a computer worth 4500 bucks and has limited edition stuff in it. I immediately push my button to lock my door and sound the alarm.
cbc - AAAAHHHH!!!
em - WHY DID YOU DO THAT!?!?!?!
me - please return the pc to where it was NOW!
and em just throws it on the floor and ed starts to stomp on the parts inside. completly destroys everything that was inside. i almoast pass out when i saw the gtx 1080ti in half. i go to the back close the door and take out my cellphone to speak to the local police. after 5 minutes the cops are there and they get arrested for destroying private property robbery and not leaving the shop when i told them to leave. they had to pay the full amount for the pc that they broke . they still had the nerv to try and say that it was not that expensive, that it only was 50 bucks like what.
well i hoped you liked it and have a wonderful day!
PS i do not know totaly my currency to usd so it might change a bit and that SAS about 8months ago
