Bitcoin Node Count Falls to 3-Year Low Despite Price Surge

"full node" protocol developers are the real cancer in bitcoin

How the hell did these socially akward nerds ever get to be so influential?
First the core boys. Then the BCH devs
Seriously. You trusting your hard money to these economically illiterate code monkeys and their "nodes". I couldnt give one shit less about the opinion of any of these developers. Just like I dont give a shit about the guy desiging sewer pipes to my house.
Sound money cant rely on these people.
MINERS must hire and pay developers to simply improve throughput. Thats it. Users choose with their money.
Developers have no place to BE IN CHARGE of anything.
This is an old misconception from the very early days of bitcoin when they were actually needed (until they fucked it up)
Now these monkeys are demanding 8% of rewards haha. FIRE THEM ALL
Oh you made a node software that has 3 instances running? SIT THE HELL DOWN and be humble

IamA Founder of HOPR a pioneering data privacy project. My name is Dr. Sebastian Bürgel - AMA

HOPR Team Foreword: Dr. Sebastian Bürgel received his PhD from ETH Zurich, one of the world's top 10 universities for Science and Technology, before becoming an entrepreneur and architect of decentralized blockchain applications. His technical know-how helped shape the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) Law of Switzerland. Previously, Dr. Bürgel co-founded Validity Labs, the first Swiss blockchain education and service company, and taught the former Swiss President, Johann Schneider-Ammann, his first blockchain lesson.
Dr. Bürgel also co-founded SONECT, a fintech startup that developed a widely-used virtual ATM network.
In His Own Words: I have dedicated my career to building technical solutions that empower the individual.
I am contributing to a privacy-first web3 with HOPRnet.org, a blockchain-based data privacy project I founded, where we are taking a positive and empowering approach to providing network-level data privacy for all. We are also incentivizing everyone – not just those with technical experience – to relay data (which masks sender and recipient) by running a HOPR node and earning HOPR tokens.
Privacy is a major topic for the web3, powering the next generation of web applications, platforms and services. I am also interested in the future of work towards a post-corporate era. Do humans need companies to create value? Digital organizations such as DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) are a major shift away from traditional employment, organizations and the way we work.
Before joining the blockchain and crypto ecosystem, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow and PhD student at ETH Zurich in the domain of microtechnology and microfabrication for biomedical applications such as drug discovery, cancer research and neglected tropical diseases.
I am happy to engage in discussions and support people who #buidl:

An expression of gratitude to the bitcoin core developers

I have been hodling bitcoin for almost 5 years. I rarely contribute. I’ve seen all the drama unfold. Bitcoin has been, and continues to be, by far, the greatest story that’s ever been told.
I want to send my genuine heartfelt thank you to the developers (past and present) who have contributed to the bitcoin core project. All I kindly request of them is to ensure bitcoin merely exists for the rest of our lives (and beyond). Just pure survival. Keep it breathing. Keep its heart beating.
Thanks to bitcoin, I no longer need to work. I am financially free with minimal risk of that status changing if bitcoin continues to just survive. That’s not to say that my financial freedom can’t exist with fiat. It can, but there are greater risks attached (my money being inflated away, my income stream suddenly stopping or reducing, the government/bank freezes my bank account because I did/said something they don’t like).
Because of bitcoin, I have freedom of speech, financial independence and time. An abundance of time, my most precious asset. I am free to spend time with family and friends. I am free to enjoy the beach. I am free to go traveling. I am free to wake up on my own clock. I am free to express myself how I see fit with minimal risk of financial repercussion. I don’t often do these things, but having the option to do so on my own time is a true gift, especially at a fairly young age. This is what I truly value.
Bitcoin has taught me so much about the world. The difference between Keynesian and Austrian economics, politics, what is valuable, how bad an unlimited supply of money is for society, the true meaning of inflation, how ugly the scam of central banking and banking is, libertarianism, crony capitalism, the principles of decentralisation, open-source, permissionless access and innovation, privacy, anonymity, trust, anti-fragile, properties and pitfalls of gold, questioning the need for government, valuing time and patience with a long term view. The list is endless. The rabbit hole runs very deep.
Reading about these concepts 5 years ago, slowly unplugging myself, and over time, it actually making sense when nobody else seemed to believe or care, made me think I was the one with a tinfoil hat on my head. I am now absolutely convinced on bitcoin's ideology and slowly, others are starting to wake up as well. I find it incredibly unfortunate that a lot of people haven't taken the opportunity to read and understand the ideology, but rather just jump on the speculative bandwagon. People are looking to get rich quick, rather than get free quick. This will end in tears. Whether tears of joy, or tears of sorrow, I don’t know. Either way, it’s incredible that bitcoin will channel one of mankind’s ugliest traits (greed) to ultimately create a better world for all. Extraordinary.
Bitcoin has given me so much, and I feel bad that the extent of my contribution back to the bitcoin network is the mere running of a node. I could probably contribute more, but honestly, I would just like to enjoy my life, not hurt anyone, be a good citizen of the world, a good husband, a good son, maybe even a good father some day. I want to keep life simple. I am content and at peace and I believe this is my greatest contribution to society. Peace and contentment.
I have to admit, my balls aren’t as large as the bitcoin core developers. I mean, these guys fuck. There’s a lot of weight on your shoulders. It cannot be easy. And from what I gather, it won’t get easier. It seems like there’s still an enormous uphill battle.
Ultimately, I'd like to see the evils of fiat money destroyed. It is a cancer to society, destroying our planet at large. I expecting no compromises to core principles. Absolutely no negotiating with terrorists. Stab fiat right in its jugular. Land the final blow so hard that fiat won't ever think of getting back up again. End this failed central banking experiment.
My plea is that you continue act in the best interests of bitcoin no matter how large your bitcoin balance gets when converted to fiat or how difficult it gets. We can’t go back to fiat. It's not an option. Once you’ve understood the principles of bitcoin, you just can’t go back to the previous system. The freedom is too sweet. But the responsibility is much greater. I understand that bitcoin is still an experiment, but I will be absolutely distraught if we end up back in the master-slave relationship. I do not have it in me to appeal to authority again. Please don’t let this happen.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have saved me from all sorts of problems in my life. For that, I am truly, truly grateful.

Satoshi whitepaper's "longest chain is Bitcoin" rule does not apply when comparing two chains with different consensus rules.

I have heard countless arguments that if SV ever gained 75% hashrate and forks, then it must be called BCH because it is the longest chain according to Satoshi's whitepaper.
This statement is absolutely false. The whitepaper only used the longest chain rule to help determine which chain is Bitcoin in the event the Bitcoin network is being attacked. Because there will be more honest nodes mining, the longest chain wins. The longest chain is only used to determine winner of 2 chains using the same consensus rules.
When 2 chains are following different consensus rules, longest chain does not matter at all.
See for example the ETH/ETC hardfork. Different consensus rules. No one cares which chain is longest (i.e. more work). Users decide which they want to call Ethereum.
If there will be a contentious hardfork with SV nodes forking to a 128MB chain, it doesn't matter if that chain has 75% of the miners on it. 2 different consensus rules means 2 different coins. And users will decide which coin they will call Bitcoin. Hashrate and miners don't decide that for the users.
Here's an analogy. What happens when chess game makers decide to come together to change the chess board from an 8x8 to a 9x9 board because they think having more space to play chess is better? Would users just accept that and call the new game chess? No, they won't refer to the new game (with new rules) as chess. They will still refer to the original game (on an 8x8 board with the original rules) as chess.
That said, it is possible that users will decide that the SV fork is the true BCH. But it will be because they choose to call that the real BCH, and not because a majority hashrate demands it to be called Bitcoin.
Edit: It is funny the people upvoting this thread, they don't even realize they are upvoting Core propaganda from over a year ago by Charlie Lee, who is a huge Core troll and BCH hater and member of the magical crypto friends. This was Charlie's logic on why blocksize upgrades will never be allowed on Core, and UASF will win. All I did was switch BU out for SV, and the rest is word for word. This sub has been taken over by the same Core cancer that has killed BTC Legacy. Hopefully this time miners will have the guts to prevail over these PoSM attacks on Bitcoin.

John Mcafee is right: Devs never had power, they are replaceable, Jihan and his mining empire are not as easily replaced.

Pre-note:
Miners are probably going to do 2x just to take the power away from the cancer in this project which is small blockers and core minions. Once they have ripped the privileges away from the clowns, a majority will likely support Bitcoin Cash, the real Bitcoin.
At this point, the cancer will be gone, the bad people are powerless, and we have two competing chains to choose from - Segwit2x or Bitcoin Cash 8MB, With Garzik controlling the Bitcoin Repo and The cash devs controlling the cash one. Core is out. The market will then decide which of these is the real coin. IMO very few players will even consider corecoin as the real Bitcoin.
Core coin of course will fade into obscurity relatively quickly as the POW change will make them an extreme minority with little to no hash power, then and only then will they learn how important hash power is. This of course, combined with the fact that segwit2x will NOT add replay protection, this is where core bites the dust.
Now, here is the reason why John Mcafee is right about the devs being replaceable and miners are not:
Remember, your influence in the system is determined by how much you have invested into it's security. Devs that just get paid to code are replicable, they have not invested in the security of the system other than time spent coding for it. Remember, of the core devs in question, over 1/3 are employed by Blockstream and most are receiving compensation in fiat. Core devs can be replaced as fast a job offers can go up on the internet, it's investors that have the real control, like the miners.
Miners like Jihan that have built an empire on securing sha256. So we are talking about the difference between building a billion dollar mining empire vs. investing some of your time as a coder.
Which is easier? Hire a new coding team, or build another billion dollar mining empire?
Jihan has an astronomical amount of SHA-256 mining power. Like it or not, this guy probably has a lot of control over Bitcoin and rightfully so, he invested that much. Jihan knows better than probably anyone else in the world about manufacturing equipment, sourcing materials, running the factory and the mines, etc. so if someone wanted to outdo him they would have to learn and gather all the knowledge and resources he already has and then figure out how to use it in a way that is efficient or better. Seems like a slim chance of that happening, when this guy is literally ahead of the curve on sha-256 equipment.
Yes, this will be sad to learn for many readers, but the truth is miners were always in full control. Devs never were, users with their silly UASF hats never were, non-mining nodes never were, it was always about who has invested the most $$ into securing the chain. And it's miners that do that. Jihan takes the cake here, sorry boys.
So anyway...that's my prediction
EDIT: I should clarify something - This post is mostly referring to Mining nodes vs. Non-mining nodes. However, this concept also applies to investors too, like large hodlers that control a lot of coins vs. a Small hodler with very little. The large hodler has invested into the system, he has the ability to influence the market by selling his coins or trading for ones on another chain. But he didn't get this power without first investing into the system. So this concept is not JUST for miners but the miners are the best example IMO. Bottom line - pony up or shut up.

ethtrader Glossary of Terms

I recently introduced a friend to our humble, little subreddit and they quickly pointed out that the language spoken here did not appear to be English. I suppose we do toss around a fair amount of acronyms, memes, and slang. I put together a quick glossary of terms for them and figured I should post it here in case any other new ethtraders can benefit from it:

Trading Related:

Crypto-currency related, but not really specific to Ethereum:

Terms more specific to Ethereum

Any mistakes I made? Any terms you would add?

Tipping / Giving Tuesdays - This will be my last Tipping Tuesdays thread - /u/couchdive will be taking over - click here for the explanation!

- Passing the Torch - Explanation

Thanks to everyone for supporting this thread for the last 6 months, It's been a very fulfilling way to give to people all over the world and introduce people to Bitcoin. SO MANY of you have reached out in pm To personally thank me for introducing you to this magical world of internet money and charity - this has brought me a great deal of happiness :)
In the essence of honesty and openness which is something I have always encouraged, I felt it wouldn't be possible to continue with Tipping Tuesdays - My two primary reasons being:
  1. Very busy work schedule which has been taking up the majority of my time
  2. Changetip has recently approached me to work with them in a few capacities, one being charitable efforts. This aligns perfectly with what I want to do with my life, they also have an exceptionally talented and more importantly a kind team.
In the interest of an open give away thread which is both charitable and encourages giving, I've asked couchdive to take over Tipping/Giving Tuesdays. I genuinely hope it continues down a good path and that the community Continues to love and support a give away thread from the people for the people. I will be stopping in the thread to tip people since I will be in denial for the first few weeks :D
If you have ever heard of Meerkat feel free to follow me on twitter @analyzerx7 for occasional give away sessions on live stream. Again thanks /bitcoin for basically being fucking awesome <3
